"Dare to risk public criticism." ~ Mary Kay Ash”

General Information

"The [Speech] philosophy is built upon the belief that no form of activity is any more important than that of learning to speak effectively. All true Americans believe in educational enlightenment, but the effectiveness of each enlightenment may be lost through the inability of our people to express to others their ideas and beliefs."                                                         ~Iowa High School Speech Association Directive

Coach Junge's Expectations

Logistics of Speech Season

  • Each season is broken into two sections: Large Group Contests and Individual Event Contests.

    • Large Group features performances by two or more people in any given event.

    • Individual Events are performances by an individual.

  • Each section has a total of three contests: District, State, and All-State.

    • At District, contestants perform in front of one IHSSA qualified judge for a score and oral comments.

    • At State, contestants perform in front of a panel of three judges for a score and written comments.

    • If invited to All-State, contestants perform in front of expert critics for oral comments only.

  • Each member of our team will deliver their best effort in each of their events.

  • They will commit to the success of the team and commit to the scheduled rehearsals and contests.

  • Participating in Speech:less isn't an afterthought or resume padder - it must be a priority for each performer, not only for their personal benefit, but for the benefit of team cohesion.

  • Team members will support each other and make each performer feels confident, safe, and strong.

  • Gloating about results, especially in a mean or hurtful manner, will not be tolerated. Participation may be in jeopardy.

Contest Scoring
  • Judges use the following rating system for each contestant or performance group:

    • Division I: Excellent

    • Division II: Good

    • Division III: Fair

    • Division IV: Disqualificaiton due to constitutional violation

  • Division I at District is an automatic State Qualification
