Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who's in charge?
We are Coach Junge and assistant Coach Mceniry. You can reach us at: pjunge@marion-isd.org or mmceniry@marion-isd.org We're also on GroupMe!
  • Do you have social media?
Yes! Find us on Twitter @ThespiansMHS
  • How much time will this take?
That depends on the event and the student's other commitments. The performer can dedicate as much time as they want! But generally, we want each group to rehearse at least twice a week.
  • When does the season start?
Large Group rehearsals start around Thanksgiving. Individual rehearsals start the last week of January.
  • What if I have a work, school, family, or activity conflict?"
Let me know immediately of any unavoidable conflicts. The best thing to do is to avoid conflicts before they come up. Please inform your employer of the contest dates and make sure you are able to have those days off. You also want to give these dates to your family so they know when they can plan that family trip. Don’t worry about conflicts with other school-sanctioned events, the coaches and directors will manage those.
  • What if I have more questions?
Please check the website regularly for the most up-to-date information, including links to the contest site’s website. These usually include schedules, food available, and maps of the venue. And of course you can always ask the coaches!
  • How does the season work?
ach season is broken into two sections: Large Group Contests and Individual Event Contests. Each section has a total of three contests: District, State, and All-State.
  • What is Large Group?
Features performances by two or more people in any given event.
  • What is Individual?
    Performances by an individual.
  • Can you explain how the contests work?
I'd love to! At District, contestants perform in front of one IHSSA qualified judge for a score and oral comments. At State, contestants perform in front of a panel of three judges for a score and written comments. If invited to All-State, contestants perform in front of expert critics for oral comments only.
  • What is the code of conduct for Speech?
Each performer is a representative of Marion Speechless and will conduct themselves accordingly. They will: *Be proud of their accomplishments and those of others - we all deserve it! *Follow the extracurricular Code of Conduct policy set by Marion High School. *Honor scheduled performances and meet given deadlines. *Be respectful and supportive to fellow performers and non-performers alike. *Do not brag about your accomplishments in a way that insults other performers. *Go to as many of your teammates’ performances as possible. *Offer praise and helpful advice as requested (don’t offer it if it’s not wanted). *Practice personal accountability in both rehearsals and performances. *Remember that by not being accountable, you risk jeopardizing the success of teammates. *Attend all scheduled rehearsals. If a performer misses 20% or more of scheduled rehearsals they may not be able to compete. *Attend all scheduled contests. *Tell the coaches about potential conflicts before Winter Break.
  • What is expected on contest days?
Another excellent question. *Arrive on time for departure. *Support as many performers as you can be attending their performances. *Be quiet and respectful in the hallways during contest. *You are responsible for knowing when and where you perform. *I will give you your ballots on the way to the contest, fill them out and keep them safe. *Be quiet and respectful in the hallways. If someone asks you to be quiet, please do so politely. *Keep your phone on you in case we need to find you. *Keep our area of the gym neat and organized. We don't want to lose anything. *Perform your own piece, don't worry about how "good" others seem. They're probably saying the same about you! *DFTBA!! We are Marion and no matter our results, we’re always awesome!
  • What's the policy on traveling to and from contests?
*We will travel as a team to and from contests on the bus.* *Exceptions to this rule will ONLY be made if PRE-ARRANGED with Coach Junge. *Exceptions can include work, family, and school activity conflicts. *You will NOT be allowed to leave the contest with anyone but your own parent(s)/guardian(s). *For contests within 15 miles of MHS, students may arrange their own travel, however they are expected to stay at the contest until everyone on the team has performed.
  • Do we have a dress code?
Yes we do! *Present your best self at all times, even when not performing. We’re representing our community. *NO JEANS, SWEATS, EXERCISE CLOTHES, TENNIS SHOES while performing. *Button-down shirts require a tie. (V-neck sweaters with ties are a great choice.) *Skirts must be long enough that you can bend over without worrying. (Leggings instead of tights are a great choice.) *Leggings must be paired with shirts/tunics/dresses need to fall below the hips. *Make sure shoes are quiet. *Judges should not be able to see through it, down it, or up it. *Hair pulled back, show the judges your wonderful faces. *No Marion-branded apparel (let your parents/friends know this as well) *No huge, distracting jewelery or scarves. *Piercings are generally ok, if they aren't over the top.
