Individual Events is the second half speech season. It involves a single performer creating a strong, independent performance. 

Three individuals from each school may compete in each event, unless otherwise noted.

Individual Events

Public Address
  • Presentation of someone else’ s speech.

  • Convey the author’s word with passion and import.

  • Intro must include author and title.

  • Notecards up to 50 words allowed.

  • 8 Minutes

Acting

  • Act out a section from a play or literature (humorous or dramatic).

  • May portray more than one character.

  • Memorized lines and movement.

  • No costumes or make-up.

  • 8 minutes

  • 6 entries per contest minus SM entries.

Solo Musical Theater

  • One song only, no dialogue.

  • Must bring pre-recorded music.

  • 5 minutes

  • 3 entries per contest - takes from acting allotment

Interpretive Prose
  • Read interpretively one or more selections of prose, based on a similar theme or aspect.

  • May include introductory and transitional wording between selections.

  • 6 minutes

Interpretive Poetry
  • Read interpretively one or more selections of prose, based on a similar theme or aspect.

  • May include introductory and transitional wording between selections.

  • 6 minutes

Literary Program
  • Read interpretively at least one prose and one poetry selection based on a common theme.

  • Theme must be stated.

  • A balance of prose and poetry is best.

  • 8 minutes

Spontaneous Speaking
  • Speech is generated at contest based on a current event.

  • Three topics are drawn, one is chosen.

  • An outline is allowed during the speech.

  • 3 minutes to prepare.

  • 5 minutes

Original Oratory
  • A persuasive speech on any topic written by performer.

  • Notes or manuscript may be used.

  • 8 minutes

Radio News Announcing
  • 3-8 students.

  • Prepare newscast based on news stories gathered within the school year.

  • Videotape taken to contest for judging.

  • 2 people read news, 1 weather person, 1 sportscaster, camera people. 500 word feature story written by students, and student written commercial.

  • 12-15 minutes

  • 1 team per contest

Expository Address
  • Present an informative original speech Notes allowed.

  • Costuming and audio and/or visual aids allowed if they contribute to the overall purpose.

  • 6 minutes

Storytelling
  • Retell any story from any source.

  • No notes allowed.

  • Must sit on a stool the entire performance.

  • 5 minutes

     

Solo Improv
  • Create and act out a story based on a drawing of a situation and two characters.

  • 3 minutes preparation time.

Reviewing
  • Review a book , movie, drama work, music, concert, a movie made for television, or any other form of media.

  • Provide Information and critique, not just a plot summary.

  • Notes and visuals allowed

  • 8 minutes

After Dinner Speaking
  • Present a humorous, informational speech directed to a specific audience.

  • Intro must identify audience you’ve chosen.

  • Notes allowed - up to 50 words.

  • 5 minutes
