Large Group Events

Large Group is the first half speech season. It involves a group of performers coming together to create breathtaking and fun performances in the following events. 

Three performance teams from each school may compete, unless otherwise noted.

One-Act Play
  • Any number of students.

  • Memorized lines, make-up, costumes, set, and sound effects are all used in performing a one-act play.

  • ≤ 35 minutes.

  • 1 team per contest

Reader's Theater
  • 2 -15 students.

  • Read from scripts. Based on a story or play.

  • ≤ 25 minutes.

  • 1 team per contest

Ensemble Acting
  • 2-6 students.

  • Memorized lines. No costumes or make-up. Choose your own pay or check speech files.

  • 15 minutes.

Choral Reading
  • 3-15 students.

  • Read from scripts. Based on poems, a play, or a story.

  • May use live music

  • 15 minutes.  

  • 1 team per contest

     

Group Mime
  • 2-6 students.

  • Movement without words to indicate a story or an idea. No costumes. No makeup can be worn. Music without words may be used.

  • 7 minutes

Solo Mime
  • 1 student.

  • Same as group mime.

  • 5 minutes.

Group Improvisation
  • 2-5 students.

  • Group chooses one situation from three that are drawn at contest.

  • Two minutes to choose situation, determine roles and plot, and begin performing.

  • 5 minutes

Musical Theater
  • 2-6 students.

  • Perform scenes with song and or dance from a musical.

  • No costumes. Lines/Songs Memorized. Recorded music without words must be used.

  • 10 minutes.

TV News Team
  • 3-8 students.

  • Prepare newscast based on news stories gathered within the school year.

  • Videotape taken to contest for judging.

  • 2 people read news, 1 weather person, 1 sportscaster, camera people. 500 word feature story written by students, and student written commercial.

  • 12-15 minutes

  • 1 team per contest

Radio Broadcasting
  • 2-8 students.

  • Prepare newscast based on news stories gathered within the school year.

  • Audio tape or CD taken to contest for judging. News, weather, and sports must be included. Original feature story and 30-45 second commercial written by students.

  • 5 - 6 minutes

  • 2 teams per contest
